A series of 21 ‘living books’ has been launched online as part of a pioneering initiative designed to provide a bridge between the humanities and the sciences.
The Living Books About Life series is written and produced by humanities scholars from universities across the world – from the UK and America to Poland and Australia – and has re-packaged and re-presented science-related research material to make it more accessible to a humanities audience.
Funded by JISC and published by the Open Humanities Press (OHP), the books address a number of scientific topics whose unifying theme is life, including air, agriculture, bioethics, cosmetic surgery, energy, neurology and human cloning.

Although the SIGN guideline for antimicrobial prophylaxis gives guidance for plastic surgery many procedures are omitted and there is a paucity of information as to current practice in the UK. It has been repeatedly shown in the US and elsewhere that antimicrobials for prophylaxis are prescribed inappropriately by plastic surgeons. Surveys highlight inconsistencies with respect to; the indication for prophylaxis, antibiotic choice and antibiotic duration. Tradition, fear of litigation, incidental reports of serious complications and the lack of evidence based guidelines are the reasons cited for inappropriate prescribing. The timing of surgical procedures afternoon versus morning or Friday versus Monday doesn’t affect the risk of death after surgery, concludes a study in the December issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia, official journal of the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS). The findings help to alleviate concerns that fatigue may contribute to an increased rate of safety problems for operations performed later in the workday or workweek.
