Individual and ethnic aspects of preoperative planning for posttraumatic rhinoplasty

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Abstract  The aim of this study was to compare the aesthetic results of post traumatic rhinoplasty among Europeans with populations
of healthy Caucasians described in earlier reports, and to collate correct parameters of nasal shape in healthy representatives
of both sexes and various races for improvement in aesthetic results of surgery. 3-D scanning of the face was performed in
54 patients after posttraumatic septorhinoplasty. Analysis of 3D model was based on two indices of the nasal proportions and
four angles of the region from 18 anthropological points. Parameters of the nasal shape in addition to gender were compared
to average values of healthy Caucasian population, described before. Normal characteristics of the nose among individuals

Epidemiology of plastic surgery trauma in people with associated drug and alcohol dependence: developing guidelines for optimal treatment

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

We describe the challenges and
epidemiology of injuries in this group and suggest an algorithm for optimal management. A retrospective study was carried
out of medical records of people with drug and alcohol problems treated in the plastic surgery unit between January 2004 and
December 2007 inclusive is presented. Exclusion criteria: (1) elective admissions, (2) previous, but not current drug or alcohol
use, (3) a short history of excessive alcohol intake, (4) isolated burn injuries, and (5) no notes available. Injuries were
sustained by 77 people. Males (64) were more commonly referred than females (13), with a mean age of 37 years (20–65) at presentation.
Delayed presentation (17/77) and non-compliance with treatment (16/77) was common. Only six patients were employed, nine …

The trampoline repair for inverted nipples

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Abstract  Nipple inversion can be a challenging condition to repair. Here we describe a technique of correction of the inverted nipple
that is safe, quick and be done easily under local anaesthesia, with little risk on complications like loss of nipple, leaves
no significant scarring, and does not burn other bridges that can be used if this technique fails to achieve the desired outcomes.
It also does not have the problem of causing a purse string effect around the nipple-arearola complex that some other techniques
might cause.

Enhanced Eyelashes: Prescription and Over-the-Counter Options

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Abstract  Women have long strived to possess long, thick, and dark eyelashes. Prominent eyes and eyelashes are often considered a sign
of beauty and can be associated with increased levels of attractiveness, confidence, and well-being. Numerous options may
improve the appearance of eyelashes. Mascara aims to temporarily darken, lengthen, and thicken eyelashes using a combination
of waxes, pigments, and resins. Artificial eyelashes can be adhered either to the dermal margin or to individual eyelashes.
Individuals may even use eyelash transplantations to improve the appearance of their eyelashes. The unique properties of eyelashes
(e.g., relatively long telogen and short anagen phases compared with scalp hairs, slow rate of growth, and a lack of influence
by androgens) may al…
